Mechanical Engineering Degree with a specific degree?

I am in my 1st year studying a bachelors degree in automotive engineering. I have heard many a time that studying mechanical engineering would allow me to access a wider verity of jobs and engineering careers. However my main intention is to work in the vehicle design/technology sector. Is there any such qualification that allows me to hold both qualification titles? I don't intend in solely intend studying mechanical engineering since many employers in the sector are asking for more specific degrees.
